People Horrified As American Brings Water Backpack to European Restaurants

When 34-year-old Liz White from North Carolina couldn't find the water she wanted on her European trip, she came up with an unusual solution—bringing her hiking hydration backpack to the restaurant.

White had been traveling through London, Venice, and the Dolomites, where she says she struggled to meet her daily water intake. "I drink a lot of water in general," she told Newsweek. "After a few days of struggling to get the water amount I desired at restaurants in Italy and England, I realized I could be innovative."

Her solution? Bringing her hiking hydration backpack to sit-down meals. "It worked really well! I didn't have to repeatedly ask for water refills, or buy water at the restaurant," she said. "I adapted to the conditions by just sipping from my backpack instead."

She shared her unusual method for hydration in a now-viral video on TikTok which has more than 100,000 views since being shared last week.

The response was swift as people reacted to White's backpack solution. In the video she said: "Y'all are flaying me alive in the comments, calling me a stupid American, but I don't think you understand how accessible water is in the States," she explained that the difference in Europe was stark, offering examples: "This is a typical pour of water I receive in Europe when I ask for water in a restaurant," she said, showing a small glass of water.

The debate follows a recent wave of TikTokvideos where American tourists claim water is hard to come by in Europe. Europeans took to TikTok to debunk the idea that water is hard to access, with one viral clip showing a Danish woman calmly filling her bottle from a bathroom sink, captioned, "It's literally free from the tap."

While Philippa Raphet Meeg from France responded to the trend saying: "Just because we don't carry around big Stanleys all the time doesn't mean we don't drink water. Please, please stop."

As White's video gained more attention, opinions on White's water method were seriously mixed.

"This is satire right?" asked Noémie. While Alex said: "Tap water is free all over Europe. This is insane nonsense."

While others agreed with White's idea. Kat from Arizona said: "I feel dehydrated just looking at this. You go girl!" While another commenter said: "They never serve you enough water and the 500ml bottles for 4€ is too much!"

The clash, however, isn't just anecdotal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) U.S. adults drank an average of 44 ounces of water per day. While data from the European Commission found that most European countries consume less than 34 ounces per day, with the exception of Austria, Germany, Norway and U.K.

White was shocked by the reaction, but added that it didn't put her off her new water travel hack. "I was pretty surprised how offended many Europeans were," White said. "I don't think I said anything insulting, nor did I indicate that anything should be different. In fact, I shared how I chose to adapt to the culture by bringing my own water.

"I do think Americans are much more used to kind of poking fun at each other, and I've learned Europeans are a lot more defensive of their homelands," she said.

Servers in America get paid far, far better with tips than servers in Bongistan do with their 'living wage'.

No server or bartender in America wants tipping to go away. They make way more money with it. Literally anyone who has ever worked in the service industry could tell you that. The 'war on tipping' is a retarded Europoor misunderstanding of how much money service workers in America actually make. There's a reason so many people from all over the world come to America to work in the service industry, and why so many tourist spots cater to American tipping sensibilities. The workers make more money that way.

It depends, if you are working a $100+ per person tab at a nice restaurant with a liquor license you are cleaning up. Tipping is on percentage and isn't affected by inflation, yet this hasn't stopped restaurants from changing the tip options from 10%, 15%, 20% to 20% 22% 25% on their stupid little machines. I would like to make $75 to ferry a couple drinks and plates and make a side salad. Even family restaurant/pub servers are making decent money but that depends on the shift and all of this is predicated on the restaurant not being a ghost town (which it might well be because taking the kids out to dinner costs like $150 and the 20% tip is on top of that).

Also jar/checkout tipping is out of hand, the fucking pot store, the sub shop, the pizzeria counter... and they are putting the 25% thing on the fucking checkout screen!... where does it end? The record store, the eye doctor, the cell phone repair kiosk?... Even the grocer wants me to 'donate' to their internal charity for tax write offs. If I'm not sitting in and receiving follow up service (a cafe, a bar, a restaurant, a car service) then I'm on team Mr.Pink. The point of tipping is moot if the guy at Radio Shack is going to have his hand out like a hobo.

On the flip side if you working at a Waffle House in GA you are going to make about "Six Fiddy" off the drunks trashing your table and probably have to do all the dishes.

A lot of this is tourist spots vs not. Anywhere that gets a lot of tourists is out to gouge you for as much as possible. Water is one way because it’s easy to say ‘sparkling or flat?’ And bring a sealed bottle, instead of a jug of tap water. Most of Northern Europe the tap water is Ok, although in some big cities (London for example) it tastes grim.
if you’re out somewhere that’s mainly locals the default would be a jug of tap water unless you asked for mineral /fizzy. Restaurants in the touristy bits of European capitals are notorious for bad practice.

I need someone well-traveled to tell me if there is anywhere in the world with potable water that tastes worse than LA's tap water.
It HAS to be potable. I'm sure tons of places have icky poison water, but I want to know if anything beats Los Angeles in terms of "It's safe to drink but it tastes like you've done something wrong and are being punished."

So instead of drinking water, they drink a lot of diuretics and poison instead? There's so much insight into Europeans in this thread...
you dont need to drink that much water if your arent a 600lb diabetic
They charge you a euro to take a piss in Europe, and you sweat like a pig walking through a hotel because they're too globohomo cucked to air condition the public spaces.
They only charge you to piss at some trainstations and autobahn reststations and its a voucher you can redeem at alot of shops.
the elderly woman sitting outsite the toilet isnt charging you, they are just asking aggressivly for a tip.
just tell them to shut their Zigeunermouth if they get angry.

The average price for a small glass of water in Western-Europe is like 1 to 2 Euro's and the waiteresses get pissy if you don't want to pay 4 euro's for a drink that's less than 1 Euro's worth. Also the lowest price for a beer at caterings is 3,50 Euro per 225ml.
Water is sold because the stupid EU made it law that you need to have something cheaper than beer on your menu.
also what country sells 225ml beer? normally its 300ml or 500ml.
also always go for the Weizen, its 5€ for 500ml and its nice.
also 400% markup is LOW, thats like selling fountain coke for 40 cent a liter...

I don't think this all or nothing response is necessary.

We don't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We just, as a culture, need to start telling the beggars to fuck off. We can still maintain legitimate tipped roles.

I refuse to tip the stupid chinese takeout place when I'm the one picking up my food and walking it home.

But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy that the server at a sitdown restaurant really hustles to make sure I'm having a good meal and a good time, and that I'm willing to pay them appropriately for giving me that personalized attention.

We just gotta collectively nut up about the beggars.

Europe has bathroom grannies? What the fuck is wrong with your continent?

I know man, you didn't have to tip the street dealer and he was risking arrest and delivered. The fucking 'bud tenders' are into the supply and can't even keep their own strains straight.

Besides being retarded ragebait this article suffers from one cardinal sin.
It made the most retarded bunch of the site appear to try and justify the abysmal service they suffer under at their shitty restaurants.
Do better.
The European has no ability for self-reflection or capability to laugh at themselves, therefore they can only sneed.

Its not that uncommon for a meal for two to hit $100 these days at even a slightly upscale joint, so that's an extra $10 minimum for the server right there, but that can go from that up to $20. For one hour's worth of work at one table tending to be people who are just out for a quiet meal. Three tables, you're looking at $60 bucks in one hour.

Now, let's put our heads together and talk about waitresses at a wing joint during a big sporting event. They look good, they're surrounded by guys who have been drinking all day, and there's a giant-ass bill from all the beer and food they're almost certainly going to be making close to 20% on as a result.
