but what attracts people to it, especially those who we're discussing in this thread?
Besides nostalgia? The Japanese still believe in beauty standards, and the character designs reflect that (and not because they still adore the Caucasian look lmao). They still study anatomy and (proper) color theory, so it's appealing to the eye and no matter what SJWs have tried to do, people still gravitate towards beauty. The large eyes aren't just a white person thing, the eyes are amongst the most expressive part of the body and that reflects
beautifully in art.
That's why this choice in taking away irises in CGI models has been giving me the ick, because while that works fine in 2D,
3D is more restrictive because of how easily it can enter into the uncanny valley with human models. I think I can see why they're doing it, to let the audience know they're essentially watching a cartoon, the problem is we have been conditioned for decades at this point that as 3D improves, the more realistic it can get, which we were watching happen
in real time. But
now all of a sudden you don't want to do that with human characters but
everything else can still look realistic? It's fucking weird and I don't like it.
Also the anime look rarely transitions well to 3D without some tweaking in the eye and face shapes, and even then, you rarely can do the traditional anime expressions well unless it's stylized. It's why I find
Lupin III: The First is one of the very few times a CGI anime worked because the character designs have rarely changed from the '71 anime, back when anime still implemented a lot of Western slapstick animation and color.
Do I
need to rag on 3D Pokémon again? Because compare the original to 3D in how Ash moves and looks, and there's not even your typical anime reaction to be seen with this sequence.
For some reason, Western animators can't seem to understand this, or they just don't care anymore. It's really frustrating to see.
