What is it with young troons and massive weight gain? I used to be a skinny little thing. It took me three pregnancies and around 20 years to be thicc. I'm not a healthy eater and I don't get enough exercise. Most young men can double fist a chocolate cake and not gain an ounce. It's the fact that we ignore that if your kids claim to be trans, there is categorically something wrong with them.

For Lea Salonga, musical theater experience qualifies as preparation for parenthood. From decades of treading the boards in “quite an unpredictable, sometimes think-on-your-feet type of art form,” she says, “I've learned how to raise a child who is their own being.”


At 18, Nic Chien is around the same age his mother was when she first became an international stage star. The Manila native earned her Tony Award in 1991 for her breakout work as Kim in the hit musical Miss Saigon before providing the singing voices of Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan, making history as Broadway's first Asian Éponine in Les Misérables and more.


What was Salonga like back then? “I was a relatively calm and stoic teenager,” the star of Stephen Sondheim revue show Old Friends recalls to PEOPLE in this week’s issue. She nods teasingly toward her son. “Nic, not so much.”

Although Nic — the only child of Salonga and her entrepreneur husband Robert Chien — isn’t having quite the whirlwind introduction to adulthood that his mother did, it has been tumultuous in a different way: Assigned female at birth, he identified as transmasculine at age 14, and began taking testosterone this January. “I am still figuring it out,” Nic, who’s preparing for a gap year after graduating from his New York City high school, admits of the transition. “It took a while. A lot of crying! A lot of, ‘You gotta tell me how you feel’ and a lot of, ‘I don't know what I'm feeling.’”

When Nic first came out to his mother, she wondered aloud if he was actually nonbinary — “an okay reaction,” he tells her playfully. “I tell my mom almost everything.” His family, including his dad, has been “very accepting, so I’m not super afraid to say this stuff,” he adds. Salonga “just didn’t want my life to be as hard as it would be.”


And Nic is well-aware that in today’s world, growing up trans is indeed challenging. Even with a parent as understanding as Salonga, who has advocated for LGBTQ+ rights since the AIDS crisis struck members of the theater community, Nic’s transition has been an emotional process. “This was the most ideal situation for me,” he says, and still, “It was rough.”

“Every child that comes into this world is different,” says Salonga. “You have to meet your kid where they are.”
Parenting doesn’t come without “expectations,” she adds. “Homework needs to get done… I'm glad that this kid can cook and do his own laundry and doesn't forget to feed the cat! But really, the one thing that I've learned is that you have to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised.”


That goes for “literally any kid,” queer or otherwise, continues Salonga. “As a parent, I want to set my child up for success. The grown-ups in the room need to help kids feel safe and strong and ready to conquer the world on their own terms.”

For Nic, conquering the world on his own terms means following in his mother’s footsteps onstage — and “playing boy characters,” a lifelong dream, he says. This August he’ll portray Jack in an Into the Woods production in the Philippines (where the family lives part-time), joining Salonga as the Witch. And ahead of college, he and his mother will continue to do their favorite activity: seeing musicals and discussing them over dinner.


Nic’s advice for other parents of queer children is simple: “Just love your kid. And if you don't, why did you have kids in the first place?”


Of potential tough times ahead as a trans adult, he remains realistic yet hopeful. “Sometimes I feel alone, but I'm not.” Looking at his mother, he adds, “It does really help to have people in your corner.”

For Nic, conquering the world on his own terms means following in his mother’s footsteps onstage — and “playing boy characters,” a lifelong dream, he says. This August he’ll portray Jack in an Into the Woods production in the Philippines

Good luck trying to do that in the long term. It's okay now because she's passes onstage as a boy. I can't imagine she'd get roles once she gets hairloss and the frogvoice.
