Let's talk Stargate.

I watched some more Stargate SG-1 and thankfully season ten is shaping up better than anything on Atlantis so far. The show is still generally weaker, but I am enjoying the Ori arc well enough. The stuff with the immaculate conception is still pretty put there, though. And I cannot fathom why the Ancients insist on being complete retards. Maybe this Merlin stuff will shape up into something half-decent. Medieval lore is a little less compelling than the stuff from the early seasons.

Beau Bridges has been alright though. I kind of like his character in the show. The Free Jaffa are total idiots though and Teal'c and Bra'tac need to cut their losses and retire.

Back to Stargate Atlantis season three I guess... yay. Let's see what the idiots do this time.

Also enjoying watching Dr. Weir slowly become Hitler and Dr. Beckett become Mengele is a secret joy of mine.
From basically being introduced as the anti-war/anti-military character to space Hitler is quite the character growth. SG1 and Atlantis weir are pretty much different characters.

It gets frustrating when every other town they go is the same medieval set.

It took too long for them to shit and get off the pot. SG-U had some serious "Star Trek" potential with some lovecraftian over tones. Exploring strange new worlds and meeting new civilizations and all that jam. But instead the entire first season was "lets fix the ship", and the second season was "Lets figure out how to get control of the ship".

Took too loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong. Episode 1, end up on ship. Its falling apart. Episode 2. Fix the ship. Episode 3. Get control of the ship. Episode 4, introduction of overall story arc. Boom. Bang. Bong. Done. It was booooooooooooooooooring the way they did it. Show runners were too high on their own farts, introducing on top of their excruciatingly long repair simulation, needlessly dense mellow drama and back stories that were barely relevant. Lots of wasted potential there.
The drama could have worked if it was written properly, but most of the old writing room weren't used to writing character relationships (we saw their attempts in the later seasons of Atlantis). Brad Wright hired new writers for the second season of SGU but it was too late, since the ratings were low and MGM was going bankrupt.

But I did enjoy seeing Richard Kind chew the scenery in that one episode. He saved what was otherwise a totally infuriating premise filled with staggering lapses in judgment. I can't wait to see what these retards do next.
Somehow they made another episode with Kind's character.

Same with McKay. I liked him more in SG-1 and SGU than Atlantis.

Ben Browder also got some really good episodes to show his talent.

That Village set cost them a fortune.

I have all of SGU but never even knew it existed until I downloaded this torrent to re-watch SG-1 and get into Atlantis. Should I even bother?

It is my understanding that SGA got canceled before they could even finish the story; their general expectation being to wrap it in season 6 and do a movie... which led them to draw out a ton of plot lines and character arcs that never got finished. Considering what you said about SGU, it sounds like they did not learn from this error and built SGU into an even worse hole than SGA.

Just watched the Memento Mori episode. Very missable and obvious filler, except for the inclusion of the magic treasure room that is definitely going to come up later. Oh and the neighbor from That 70s Show was there. Another good cameo.

But thia episode really highlights an issue I am starting to have with both shows. SGA always had this, but SG-1 has gotten worse as the series gets on in seasons: entire episodes obviously only exist to introduce some random artifact or ten second bit of exposition to be referenced later on. Early and mid SG-1 also did this, but the A-plot, B-plot was set up much better.

On the SGA front, we had the episode with the wraith with the KISS tattoo, which was decent. The Genii are still at it and frankly even with Kolya showing up again (always nice to see Robert Davi getting a paycheck) the Genii and all their shit is really starting to wear thin. I am glad to see the Wraith get some character development as a race. They always seemed like they could be more than cartoon villains. But otherwise it was also a missable episode.

Brief return to SG-1, that Morena Baccarin woman has a hell of a rack on her. Top-tier casting.

Pretty much. The SGA ending is sudden and IMO not great. They were expecting to wrap it up in a DVD like SG1, but never did. IIRC, they got the news it was being canceled as they were mostly done with filming for the season which is why it was sudden and rushed.

I would watch SGU, I honestly like it despite it ending prematurely and some of the early melodrama. It's also some of Joel Goldsmith's best work IMO.

Yes and no, technically the show was cancelled but I think it had run its course by.

You should watch it. It's a different tone but it's worth watching for the story arcs. They had some interesting sci-fi concepts and I wish the show had continued.

Oh right, that happened.

My question is that scientist guy was originally a linguist in the movie right? How did he suddenly go from translating languages into a hard science savant building death rays and all this other junk?

In before ban. :)

Alright! My weeklong ban for talking about Stargate is over. That means STARGATE IS BACK ON THE MENU!!

So SG-1 season 10. They finally did a proper episode for Claudia Black; an episode which was fine. Character development and some new mcguffin that will be referenced in a later episode. This is a pattern that annoys me. The whole episode is just to introduce this or that so that a future, better episode can reference it. Except it is starting to become too noticeable. After this we are treated to a nice episode of Atlantis where the Wraith finally get some much-needed development. Blah blah blah you can read more about these two in the actual Stargate thread.

Okay, so keeping with Stargate Atlantis we get a Rodney McKay episode. Even better, this one has his sister who we have only heard about. She is also a super genius but she is normal and had kids. Cool. Apparently she has a grand idea and decides to solve physics with finger paints and model trains. Okay... sure. The interplay between her and Rodney is neat and she gets called in to help Atlantis get more energy. Except they accidentally fuck up another universe and alternate-Rodney (Rod) shows up to fix things. This is compelling stuff. I like it. Rod is just Rodney, but way cooler and has a leather jacket. Anyway they solve the problem but kill their power source in the process.

At this point I feel like we have a loose end. The episode just stops. No power. Bad situation. But let's pretend everything is okay? Usually by this point Adolf Wier would be throwing Furlings into the furnaces to keep Atlantis running. But I guess not this time. We will see how this develops, but I sort of expected Rod to send them a ZPM power thingy somehow, since he mentioned they had a bunch of them.

Whatever. Onto SG-1. The Lucien Alliance shows up and attacks one of the big space ships that Earth has. They kill the cool captain dude (bummer) and then we get some neat callbacks to some really old episodes, one thing that Stargate does very well. The day is saved and everyone cheers.

The Lucien Alliance pisses me of though. These guys just show up. Suddenly they have all this tech and all this support and run heroin corn all over the galaxy and are a threat. What?? This all feels way WAY too forced and these guys are starting to annoy me even more than the Genii from Atlantis.

I don't get why we needed another bad guy with the Ori arc going strong. But another issue with Stargate that has become more apparent with time is that the writers are intentionally stretching plots out and slow walking all of it. Pretty bold move considering their show wasn't doing the best in the ratings anymore. And all of thos creates a feedback loop that ends with their shows getting canceled before they can finish the story.

The shows are still good, though the idiot squad on Atlantis are so dumb. So very dumb. But the issues are getting hard to ignore. If the Ori are such a big threat, shouldn't there be some Ori stuff in each episode? Now does not seem to be the time to bring in another bad guy and a lame one at that.

Makes me glad we are kicking the Canadians around nowadays. Fucking Canadians.

Lol, you really don't want to watch SGU then.
Amongst other bullshit things they become Space Al-Qaeda and 911 the pentagon with a spaceship.

Daniel? All the death-ray building and such happened while he was possessed by the spirit of Merlin after being twice ascended and returned to the mortal realm.

It's a science fiction show.

Jonas Quinn gang represent!

They snuck in to the power vacuum left by the collapse of the system lords. Their first appearance was season 8 (along with Vala), but it's implied they were rising in power for a few years at that point, which is how they managed to get hold of all that tech. They stole it. The show does a poor job of explaining all that, which kind of sucks, because they could have been interesting.

It kinda makes sense that some entity would take over the void left by the Goa'uld system lords. That said, I wish they had fleshed out the Lucian Alliance more instead of treating them as comic relief. They were portrayed way better in SGU.

I'm new to Stargate and about half way through SG-1 season 3.

I still can't get over how batshit crazy the premise is and yet they're totally sincere and commited to it. All of the characters are likeable and not cringe. No Neelixes or Wesleys here! The lore is (already) getting fleshed out intelligently yet the writers still manage to keep it consistent.

And I appreciate the lighter tone especially after finishing the funeral durge of DS9. The very unusual mix of military scifi, fantasy and x-files mystery is pretty compelling so far.

What a ride. Let us know when you're done with season 7.
