Hey the Trabant was pretty fucking cool. Made of plastic. Seats a family of four. So simple mechanically that any owner can fix it themselves. Drives (near) highway speeds and isn’t picky about what the road looks like.

I’d take a Trabant over some 40.000$ hybrid shitbox any day of the week.

As I recall you don’t even need to worry about oil changes, you just pour a little oil into the gasoline.

They're cool in a certain sense but trust me, you'd take the $40k hybrid any day of the week. A Trabi can be a fun project car, but it's atrocious as a daily driver.

The oil thing is just due to the two-stroke engine, they all lubricate with oil in the fuel-air mixture, whether it's a shoebox-sized 600ccm in a Trabant or an 8 litre Detroit Diesel in a fire truck.

Meh… If all you need is a car a few times a week, and maybe as a daily driver 20 km to work, I still say a Trabant is basically ideal. Noisy and slow? Sure. But also roomy and comfortable. Anything goes wrong, you can fix it yourself with a handful of tools.

Compare that with your average economy shitbox that WILL need oil changes, will need service, and will cost you 100$ in diagnostic fees just to figure out what’s wrong.

(Sure, I’d prefer a Lada Niva, but still Trabants are underrated.)

If you don't change your oil in any car you deserve a broken car. If you pay $100 for diagnostic fees, instead of dropping $20 on a bluetooth OBDII dongle, you shouldn't be driving.

actually, being the trabi motor a 2 stroker, it will never last as long as any half decent 4 stroke, and is way more thirsty. plus the hassle and cost of making fuel/oil mixture. so no, i think oil changes are overall less hassle/cost; having said that, some manufacturers really make oil and filter changes a PITA.

My guy… The oil/fuel mixture is 1:32. Hardly something that’ll bankrupt you.

Anyways, it’s a shame we don’t have anything like the Trabant. A cheap, reliable car that you can fix yourself. EVs are guaranteed to last no more than 8-10 years because of the batteries, and even the cheap ICE cars are full of computers and lockout codes.

Ukraine is just squeeling for a ceasefire/timeout so they can rebuild defenses and rearm while also rushing in NATO "peacekeepers" so that when they restart the war Russia will have to choose between keeping it close to the existing frontline or risking a nuclear war.
